Getting to and from school safely

As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.

Keep our school community safe by:

  • driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
  • being a good role model
  • never calling your child from across the road
  • using the safest place to cross the road.

Subsidised school travel

Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.

  • The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
  • The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.

Student travel passes

Up to date information about travelling in Sydney is available from transportnsw.info/school-students or call 131 500.

Travelling on public transport students need to purchase a Child/Youth Opal card. This is a Transport NSW policy.

International students are entitled to a travel concession pass. This card must be produced when purchasing your Child/Youth Opal Card. The Opal Card together with the Concession Card gives concession fares across the transport network. Fares are capped daily at $7.50 daily and $30.00 weekly. After eight paid journeys each week the travel is free for the remainder of that week.

The card can be applied for online or purchased from an Opal retailer. The card can be linked to you credit card or debit card so there is always enough value on the card to travel or to topped up at an Opal retailer.

The concession card also allows students over the age of 16 years to purchase discount admission tickets to various other places such as cinemas.
